Baton Rouge is a city of diversity. Strong roots in local culture and a booming industrial economy have created a rapidly developing metropolis with a 'down-home' southern feel. Both modern and traditional, the capital city's motto is 'Authentic Louisiana at every turn.'
Local Culture
At different times in history Baton Rouge was ruled by the French, Spanish, and English governments. Each left lasting imprints on local architecture and traditions. Baton Rouge is also the historical center of Louisiana's unique Cajun culture. Spicy food, a festive atmosphere, and a laid-back attitude are all part of the local lifestyle. Culturally, Baton Rouge has a great deal in common with its more famous cousin New Orleans, but without as many tourists.
Industry and Growth
Baton Rouge is one of the largest port cities in the United States. Because of this, the city was an early seat of the petrochemical industry. Today it is home to one of the largest refineries in the world, and several major chemical processing plants.
Business success in the mid 20th century caused the city to grow rapidly. For many years this took the form of sprawling suburbs. In recent years, attention has turned back to downtown. The state government has combined all of their offices into one large facility downtown. New residential developments are constantly underway, including many tower-style condominium buildings and mixed-use facilities.
Arts and Leisure Growth
Downtown Baton Rouge is also the center of a rapidly growing arts community. The Shaw Arts Center is home to galleries, art museums, and a theater. The Louisiana Art and Science Museum and Planetarium is also downtown, and Louisiana State University has several galleries and theater projects in the area.
Getting around
A common by-product of so much expansion is traffic. A circular bypass surrounding the city has been in the planning stages for years. Until it is finally built, congestion on the many local highways will be common. New residents may plan to take advantage of public transportation. Capital Area Transit System offers a variety of bus routes and a free trolley in the downtown area.
