Denver, Colorado New Homes

The metro Denver real estate market is growing to provide housing for a diverse population from urban chic to empty nesters. The Denver metro area includes the City of Boulder which is located just 25 miles northwest of Denver. Use NewHomeGuide.com to find Denver homes for sale in brand new residential communities throughout the Denver metro area or read on to learn more about the Mile-High City.

The City of Denver

In the Mile-High City, the fifteenth step of the state capital building is exactly one mile above sea level. Denver is located near the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains on the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado's largest city and capital, Denver has grown from a mining boom town to a sophisticated metropolis.

Denver has a population of over 500,000, with more than 2 million residents in the metro area that includes the communities of Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, Engleton, Littleton, Aurora, Thornton Westminster, Arvada, Northglen and Commerce City.

Because Denver is located east of a high mountain range and is not near a large water source, the climate is mild, dry and arid. As a result, the city doesn't get as much snow as on the other side of the mountain range and averages around 300 sunny days a year, more than southern California or southern Florida. The average high temperature for January is 43°F and in July is 88°F.

Denver was designed originally in a grid formation and many of the streets run in the North-South or East-West direction. If you ever get lost in Denver, just remember that the mountains are in the west. Like most major cities, Denver is a collection of neighborhoods with unique identities. These include Lower Downtown (known as LoDo), Capital Hill, Uptown, Curtis Park and Union Station.

Denver's main industries include communications, utilities and transportation. One major employer is the federal government with more than 200 offices in the metro area. Denver has the second highest concentration of federal employees after Washington, D.C.

Things to Do in Denver

Denver and the surrounding areas offer a wide variety of culture to cater to the tastes of sophisticated, highly- educated residents. The Denver Art Museum features the finest collection of the American Indian art. The Denver Performing Arts Complex with seating for 10,000 people offers theater, symphony and ballet. The growing music scene includes performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a 9,000 seat arena carved out of giant red rock boulders.

Downtown Denver is characterized by the 16th Street Mall designed by world famous architect I. M. Pei. This mile long pedestrian promenade is surrounded by mountain views. The Denver Zoo is the fourth most popular in the U.S. Other attractions include the Downtown Aquarium and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The Colorado Music Festival in nearby Boulder attracts professional musicians from around the world to perform contemporary and traditional classical music every summer. The National Center for Atmospheric Research also in Boulder has a mesa-top science lab.

Denver is also home to professional sports teams: NFL Denver Broncos, MLB Colorado Rockies, NHL Colorado Avalanche, NBA Denver Nuggets, as well as its soccer and lacrosse teams.
