As a major hub of the transportation industry for most of the last century, Greensboro has always been a city on the move. Today there are business projects, urban redevelopment, and plans for a new freeway that could move Greensboro right to the top of your list.
Federal Express selected Greensboro's Piedmont Triad International Airport as the site of a multimillion dollar shipping hub. This decision was made several years ago, but construction of the facility was delayed due to concerns about possible pollution and noise issues. These questions were resolved and the hub is expected to open in 2009, bringing thousands of new jobs to the metro area.
Additionally, the Honda Aircraft Company recently moved their corporate headquarters to Greensboro. They have started construction on a jet factory which is expected to bring even more jobs to the area.
Living in Greensboro
Greensboro offers a variety of neighborhood environments. There are sprawling modern suburbs and historic southern neighborhoods. The Aycock and Fisher Park districts feature large homes with turn-of-the-century architecture. Southside, the city's oldest neighborhood, has seen major renewal in the last decade. The downtown area is being redeveloped with condominiums, town homes, and mixed-use communities.
Downtown Greensboro has experienced a revival in nightlife as well. New, upscale restaurants and nightclubs have moved in alongside the theaters, the symphony, and the local opera company to cater to a growing number of residents now living inside the city full time. During the day, there are several museums and a variety of parks to visit.
Getting Around
Greensboro's popularity as a transportation hub is largely due to its position at the intersection of major interstates 40 and 85. To relieve traffic congestion in the metro area, construction is underway on a beltway loop around the city. Portions are already open with construction on other sections planned to continue through 2014.
Meanwhile, public transportation is readily available throughout the metropolitan area.
