Minneapolis, Minnesota, New Homes and Area Information
Minneapolis is located in southeast central Minnesota, along the Mississippi River and next to its "Twin City" of St. Paul. The city is located in Hennepin County and is the largest city and county seat. The United States acquired the land in an 1806 treaty with the Sioux Indians. Fort Snelling was built on the site in 1819, and in 1823, the government built a grain mill and so established the city as the dominant trade center for the Midwest.
The flour mills built along the river harnessed the power of St. Anthony Falls and eventually grew into the major corporations of Pillsbury, General Mills and Cargill, still headquartered there today. Other major employers include The University of Minneapolis, Target Corporation and 3M. With 22 of Minnesota's over 12,000 lakes, Minneapolis also boasts a robust tourism industry, with millions visiting each year.
The Minneapolis Metro area is home to an estimated 500,000 people. The city and surrounding areas have over 80 residential neighborhoods, including Linden Hills, Whittier, Prospect Park, Lowry Hill, Armatage and Kenwood. The thriving downtown area with over 28,000 residents is urban living at its best. Nicollet Mall, a 12-block pedestrian area, is the retail heart of the city. You could spend a day browsing the many shops or visiting the Gavidea Commons, City Center or Crystal Court.
A vibrant arts and entertainment community has become a city tradition. Minneapolis has more than 30 theaters. The Guthrie Theater and the Children's Theatre Company are two of the nation's best. The city is also home to world-class art museums, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Walker Art Center, and to the internationally acclaimed Minnesota Orchestra.
