The City of Columbus

Columbus was founded in 1812 and is located in central Ohio in Franklin County and parts of Delaware and Fairfield counties. As the state capital, Columbus is the largest city in Ohio with over 700,000 residents. The greater Columbus metro area has a population of over 1.7 million. Columbus earned its nickname "The Arch City" because of the dozens of arches that spanned High Street at the turn of the twentieth century.

The home to Ohio State University, Columbus has a diversified economy covering several industries including information services, retail and food services, manufacturing, insurance, finance, and health. As the state capital, most jobs are naturally available from either government or non-profit organizations. Companies based in Columbus include Nationwide Insurance, Cardinal Health, Commerce National Bank, Limited Brands, Bob Evans Restaurants and Worthington Industries.

Within the Columbus metro area there is a number of distinctive neighborhoods. Just north of downtown, there is the Short North where you'll find many art galleries. Victorian Village is a neighborhood with large, ornate Victorian homes. German Village, located to the south, is the largest privately funded historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Immediately west of downtown, there is Franklinton, which is also called "the Bottoms" due to its location below the sea level. To the west of Franklinton, there is an area known as the Hilltop.

Columbus offers several entertainment options including professional sports, performing arts, museums, fairs and festivals. Popular events include the Ohio State Fair, Columbus Arts Festival, Jazz and Rib Festival, Asian Festival, and ComFest. Major landmarks include the Wexner Center and the Ohio Statehouse. The Columbus Museum of Art and COSI - Columbus are two museums of note.

Columbus is home to the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets and Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew.
