San Diego, located on the Baja Peninsula in southern California, was the site of the first European settlement on the west coast of the United States. The city grew around one of the many missions established in California under early Spanish rule. The city of San Diego was incorporated in 1850. In the same year, San Diego County was established and California was granted statehood.
San Diego is the nation's seventh largest city with 2.5 million residents. The area has over 70 miles of white sandy beaches and abundant charm with the many trolley cars offering services through out the city. Nearly 50 miles of light-rail trolley lines circle downtown San Diego and connect the area with East County, Old Town, South Bay, Mission Valley, Qualcomm Stadium and the international border with Mexico. Two new trolley line extensions are planned.
San Diego has mild weather year round and one of the best climates in the United States. The temperature ranges from 52 degrees in January to 72 degrees in July, with an average of 257 "mostly sunny" days per year.
Defense and technology are the core of the area's economy. Once based mainly on defense and military spending, the Greater San Diego metro is now known as a "technology powerhouse", where small and mid-sized technological companies thrive. One aspect of the region that attracts businesses is the abundance of educational institutions in the area. San Diego County has 4 major universities, including the University of California, San Diego and 10 community colleges.
Tourism is another major economic force. The diversity of arts, entertainment and natural beauty attracts over16 million visitors to San Diego each year. Many come to watch the Grey Whale migration or to hike the many trails of the Mission Trails Regional Park, with 5000 acres of recreational area.
San Diego is home to both major league football, Chargers and baseball, Padres. On the weekend, you can catch a game or visit Balboa Park, the cultural center of the city with six museums, gardens and the world famous Old Globe Theatre. The city is home to the world renowned San Diego Zoo and Palomar Observatory.
