The City of Austin: The Live Music Capital of the World

Austin is the state capital of Texas with a population of nearly 700,000 and a metro area population of 1.4 million people. Located on the Colorado River in Travis County, Austin has a humid subtropical climate, meaning it gets hot in the summer and is generally mild in the winter.

The University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest universities in the country, is located near downtown Austin. Much of what goes on in the city can be somehow connected to the university, its students and professors. The city is also defined by the many state employees, politicians and lobbyists, who live, work and play in Austin.

Music, and especially live music, plays an important role in Austin's cultural identity. In fact, Austin is knows as the Live Music Capital of the World, which makes sense for a city that has more music venues per capita than any other city in the United States. Austin holds several major music events including the annual South by Southwest festival and a live concert television program called Austin City Limits.

Austin earned the nickname Silicon Hills because it has attracted several major companies from the high-tech industry including Dell, IBM, Apple, Intel and many more. This has contributed to the demand for homes in Austin, as well as to the expansion of Austin's real estate to the north and south of the city. In the northwestern suburbs of Austin, you'll find scenic rolling hills, part of Texas Hill Country.

San Marcos, Texas

The city of San Marcos with a population of about 35,000 is located just 29 miles southwest of Austin in Hays County. San Marcos is home to Texas State University - San Marcos. Major attractions include Aquarena Springs, an environmental learning center owned by the university, and the San Marcos River, a popular recreational area for those who enjoy fishing, kayaking, and other water activities.

Georgetown, Texas

The city of Georgetown has a population of about 29,000 and is situated at the fork of the San Gabriel River. The city is located 26 miles north of Austin in Williamson County. Georgetown is home to Southwestern University. A popular local attraction is the Inner Space Caverns, a natural feature found in the Texas Hill Country. The caves and caverns of Inner Space are alive and have been developing and taking shape for the past 80,000 years.
