For history buffs, San Antonio is a Mecca. In 1691 a band of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon its river, and named it "San Antonio." The actual founding of the city came in 1718 by Father Antonio Olivares, when he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which became permanently etched in the annals of history in 1836 as The Alamo where 189 defenders held the old mission against some 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days. The cry "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texan revolution against Mexico.

In addition to its rich history, San Antonio also boasts quiet park-like stretches as well as European-style sidewalk cafes, nightclubs and high-rise hotels in its ?River Walk? area, which stretches two-and-a-half miles through downtown San Antonio. If museums are your passion, the city has several including the McNay Art Museum and the San Antonio Museum of Art. For the kids, the Downtown All-Around Playground and the newly renovated Milam Park provide excellent stops for kids to burn off excess energy.

San Antonio is home to several energy companies including Valero Energy and Tesoro Petroleum. The South Texas Medical Center, a conglomerate of hospitals, clinics and research facilities, located in the northwest part of the city is the largest medical research and care provider in South Texas. San Antonio is home to the headquarters of several major corporations including AT&T and Clear Channel Communications.
