HOME BUYING RESOURCES: MOVING AND SETTLING IN

There are a lot of home building horror stories out there. Sometimes, it is hard to tell from the get-go if you've chosen the right builder to construct your dream house. Here are some signs that your builder is not the right man for the job.

  • On the initial survey, you notice they are using a toy View Master instead of proper sighting equipment.

  • After viewing the architect's plans, he asks you where you would like the roof.

  • He keeps trying to sell you on trap doors instead of staircases.

  • For payment, he asks for all of the money up front and a 30 minute head start.

  • You see four construction workers hanging hammocks on your lot.

  • He keeps insisting that kitchen toilets are all the rage these days.

  • You walk in to find most of your walls carpeted.

  • You give him a hammer and he asks you "What is this?"

  • The nursery has a wet bar.

  • He measures you before ordering doors.

  • Asks if he should build your living room around a pine tree in the yard to avoid having to get a Christmas tree every year.

  • He mentions that they ran out of nails a week ago but they found a good substitute.

  • All bedrooms have mirrors on the ceiling.

  • He asks you to fill out a survey so he can improve for his second try at building a house.
